"I always thought Marilyn Monroe looked fabulous, but I'd kill myself if I was that fat."
Liz Hurley, Allure Magazine, January 2000

Sick of the appearance fascists telling you you are too: fat, thin, tall, short, large breasted, small breasted, that your hair is not regulation length and in entirely the wrong places? Tired of the absurd amount of adulation supermodels get while those who look after abused children, care for the environment, help to keep the peace in the world's troublespots, try to cure diseases and all the other works that makes the world a better place are ignored because they aren't 'trendy'? Then this is the ring for you.

"No, I don't think anyone's ever actually looked at my magazine and decided to starve themselves"
Vogue editor on BBC documentary 'Fat'

Why I would choose to pick on supermodels? Shouldn't I be targeting those behind the supermodels? The fashion designers, magazine editors and other media manipulators who created and pushed the absurd ideal, and who keep media content at the shallowest level possible. Yes, that's true. Implicit in my 'supermodel' banner includes everyone involved in the fashion and modelling industry - all those who constantly push the sickly weak stereotype of how a woman 'should' look at us, and then shrug their shoulders when thousands of young and impressionable kids kill themselves while desperately trying to achieve the 'perfect' figure - one attained by anorexia, bulimia and drug abuse. In the wider sense, I think we should all be making a stand against all negative stereotyping of women in the media, not just the modelling industry, but also in television, film and magazines.

"No, it's because of increasing interest in sport"
Elle Macpherson, when asked by Clive Anderson if there was a relationship between the modelling industry and the enormous jump in the number of people suffering anorexia.

Why talk about 'hating' these people? Aren't they just victims of the fashion industry themselves? Yes, to a some extent that's true. Many impressionable teenagers have no doubt entered the modelling industry the hopes of their childhood dreams of being a 'fairy princess' loved by all because of their beauty, and ended up on a constant battle to starve themselves to perfection. On the other hand, what about those who profit by modelling and see nothing wrong with the industry? The above quote from Macpherson illustrates my point. Despite my mockery of her, she is not a stupid woman. In fact, she runs her own business. Yet she refuses to understand the contribution the industry makes to low self-esteem in young women. Possibly she does, but simply doesn't care. At any rate, she deserves contempt for her naivete or selfishness, and so do the others who continue to profit from the industry while screwing us all over.

So are we all supposed to go around in sackcloth and ashes because the modelling industry sucks? What, and give up my fave purple velvet top and fake snake-skin trousers? No, I don't think fashion is necessarily evil. I have to be firmly dragged past recycle boutiques in case I make bored friends go shopping with me. My objection is not to the clothing industry as such, but to it's current fondness for shoving psychologically and physically ill women at us and trying to tell us that they are a real representation of us, and the wider culture of unhealthy attitudes to the representation of women in the media that it represents.

"People think modeling's mindless, that you just stand there and pose, but it doesn't have to be that way. I like to have a lot of input, I know how to wear a dress, whether it should be shot with me standing up or sitting down. And I'm not scared to say what I think."
Linda Evangelista...explanation not necessary.
